MOUNT VERNON – 2016 marks the fourth year of the Summer Music Garden Concert Series. Located in the Children’s Garden at the Knox County Career Center, these events include music and activities for all ages. Held in the beautifully landscaped Children’s Garden, attendees are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors and nature, have a picnic, and listen to live music. This year’s concerts will occur on three Sundays – June 26, July 24 and August 21 – and run from 4 to 6 p.m. Included is an activity presented by SPI, the Science Play-Space Initiative.

This year the concert series is partnering with MTVarts and previewing the summer musical, Beauty and the Beast at the June 26th concert. The concert will feature Celeste Friedman in a Summertime Splash of Music for all ages. Celeste is a composer extraordinaire, Grammy nominee and was nominated for the Ohio Governor’s Award for the Arts in 2015. Celeste writes songs full of wonder for children, composes music for fims and has performed her heartfelt songs in Nashville at the Bluebird Cafe.

July 24 bring Zak Morgan to the stage. Zak hails from Cincinnati and attended Kenyon College as an English major. A Grammy nominated artist, he has more fun with words than Dr. Seuss, and the songs that result are as delightful for adults as they are for children. One part musical genius and one part fantastic story telling, his wshow will be punctuated by campers who attended SPI’s Trash to Treasure and Nature’s Gift Summer Camps with Holly Trask. The campers will share their creations and insights, and SPI will have a take home craft for young children as well.

August 21 will be the final concert in this summer’s series. Owl Creek writes songs that tell the stories of our lives. Performing on guitar, cello, violin, and percussion, the band is made up of Alison Cline, Mike Petee, Sarah Goslee Reed and Skip Trask. They all write entirely different styles and types of songs, yet there is a consistency in their collaboration that makes everything gel, as their new recording demonstrates. SPI will have a presence at this concert, as they celebrating their move into their new space in the Buckeye Candy Building.
