MOUNT VERNON – Director of Law Rob Broeren announced that Nikko Rommel of Howard was convicted on July 24, 2015, in the Mount Vernon Municipal Court, of Domestic Violence after a two-day jury trial. The charge arose out of an incident that occurred about April 13, 2015. Mr. Rommel violently struck his 6-year old live-in nephew with such force to leave significant bruising.
Assistant Director of Law Brittany Whitney tried the case to the jury. She presented testimony of the investigating officer, Child Protective Services, the victim’s 8-year old sister, and East Knox School officials. The jury deliberated for approximately two hours before returning the guilty verdict. Judge John Thatcher ordered Mr. Rommel to serve 180 days in jail with 120 days suspended on the following conditions: that the Defendant serve a term of probation for two years, complete a Batterer’s Intervention Program, have no contact with the victim for two years (unless supervised by Child Protective Services). The Court also assessed a fine and ordered Mr. Rommel to pay the costs of the prosecution in this matter.
