MOUNT VERNON – Volunteers gathered on the Public Square Tuesday evening to adorn the downtown area with purple ribbons to draw attention to the annual Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society. This year’s event will be held June 20 and 21 at Mount Vernon High School.

Individuals and teams have organized for relay and are raising money to donate to the Cancer Society.  Those include local cancer surivivors, their families, and members of the Knox County Sheriff’s Department and the Mount Vernon Police department.

According to the organization’s website, cancer.org, research is at the heart of their mission. For more than 65 years, the American Cancer Society has been finding answers that save lives, from changes in lifestyle to new approaches in therapies to imporove cancer patients’ qualify-of-life.
