MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Police detective who has been on administrative leave with pay for several months will be demoted and reinstated to the department January 19th following an agreement made with the city announced today by City Law Director Chip McConville. Kit Morgan will be demoted to the rank of Corporal from the rank of Sergeant. He, along with recently retired MVPD Chief Mike Merillees, became the subject of an investigation into alleged illegal activity at the city impound lot regarding parking meters and how an impounded vehicle was handled. Merillees has retired from the department.

That investigation was sparked by a series of articles in the Mount Vernon News . The investigation is still not complete and at last report from a spokesperson at the Ohio Attorney General’s office, it’s “ongoing.”

As for the future of the MVPD, interim chief Geoge Hartz will continue in that role as testing for a new chief gets underway. Mount Vernon Mayor Dick Mavis says a new chief will be selected in March or April.
