MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon’s quest for another district softball title begins today.

The third-seeded Yellow Jackets claimed a sectional crown in resounding fashion last week, pounding No. 40 Grove City Central Crossing 17-4 in five innings.

The Jackets open district play at 5 p.m. today at home against No. 18 Gahanna Lincoln. The Lions advanced with a 7-1 win over No. 15 Thomas Worthington.

Brooke Radermacher came up big in last week’s sectional final, belting a three-run home run in the second inning.

The Yellow Jackets won a district championship in 2019 en route to a regional runner-up finish.

Fredericktown will also be in action this afternoon in the Division III district tournament after winning a sectional title last week. The ninth-seeded Freddies visit No. 5 West Jefferson at 5 p.m.

Fredericktown beat Pleasant 9-4 last week to capture a sectional crown. Alyssa Perkins drove in four runs with a pair of two-run singles. Sydney Sansom has three hits, while Miranda Payne picked up the win.

West Jefferson advanced with a 6-0 win over No. 14 Northridge.

In Division IV, top-seeded Danville will host No. 9 East Knox in the district semifinals at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Blue Devils roughed up Patriot Prep 28-0 in five innings in last week’s sectional final, while the Bulldogs pounded Wellington School 22-0 in five innings.

Taryn Mickley, Keura Schilling and Cami Newbold all belted home runs in Danville’s win over Patriot Prep. Newbold knocked in five runs and scored three runs in the win.

Meanwhile, Shanda Melick hit a pair of homers in East Knox’s win over Wellington. Natalie Smith scored four runs and knocked in three more.
