HOWARD – A suffocating defensive performance helped Shadyside blank East Knox 14-0 in Friday night’s high school football playoffs.

Wyatt Reiman led the way for the Tigers with 172 yards on 33 carries and a touchdown. Jacob Visnic added 70 yards and another score.

Seventh-seeded Shadyside (5-3) jumped on top 8-0 in the first period on Visnic’s 5-yard TD bolt. The two-point conversion made it 8-0. The Bulldogs gritty defense kept it that way until the fourth quarter, when Reiman’s 44-yard touchdown dash sealed it.

East Knox quarterback Peyton Lester completed 7 of 19 passes for 80 yards, but tossed a pair of interceptions. Weston Melick caught three passes for 52 yards and Cole Delaughder had 10 carries for 39 yards to top the Bulldogs’ offense.

Defensively, Melick led the way with 12.5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and a sack. Braden Kannady had 9 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and a sack, while Lester picked off an interception.

Shadyside enjoyed a significant statistical advantage across the board. The visitors outgained East Knox 269-33 in rushing yards, and 349-113 in total yards. They also had an edge in first downs 22-9, total plays 66-36 and time of possession (26:18 to 21:42).

The Tigers will play third-seeded Hannibal River in next week’s Division VII, Region 27 semifinal.

East Knox, the region’s No. 2 seed, falls to 6-2.
