KP GOTW Week 5 image

In this week's episode, reporter Grant Pepper spoke with Mount Vernon head coach Mike Kerr and senior lineman Noah Humphrey about their matchup with Ashland on Friday.

MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon hasn’t started a season 5-0 since 1993.

The Yellow Jackets will have a chance to do just that on Friday night – but they’ll have to go through Ashland first.

In this edition of the Knox Pages Game of the Week, reporter Grant Pepper spoke with Mount Vernon head coach Mike Kerr and senior lineman Noah Humphrey about this week’s matchup.

Mount Vernon (4-0, 1-0 OCC) is coming off a dramatic 26-21 home win over Lexington last Friday. Senior tailback Wyatt Gregory scored to take the lead late, but Lexington marched down the field and had the ball in Mount Vernon territory with under two minutes remaining. That’s when senior Alex Mullins picked off a pass at his own 25-yard-line, thus clinching the game for the Yellow Jackets.

Mount Vernon is off to its first 4-0 start since 2015, and will look to make more history Friday. Ashland, meanwhile, is 0-4 for the first time since 2001. The Arrows will open OCC play Friday after struggling through a brutal non-conference schedule; their first four opponents currently have a combined record of 15-1, and Sandusky, which they lost to 46-35 last week, is state-ranked.

The Arrows return most of the offense that picked Mount Vernon apart in the second half of last year’s game. Ashland beat Mount Vernon 41-13 last season, thanks in large part to quarterback Mitch Heilmann’s 334 all-purpose yards. He and the Arrows will come to Yellow Jacket Stadium on Friday for another big-time conference battle. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
