ASHLAND -- In a game of runs, Mount Vernon unleashed the first flurry and the last one to trip Ashland 70-65 in overtime at Arrow Arena in Friday night's Ohio Cardinal conference boys basketball game.

The Yellow Jackets raced to a 24-10 first-quarter lead, but a 13-0 Ashland burst in the second period closed the gap to 32-29 at halftime.

Mount Vernon hung on to a 44-42 edge entering the final period, but the Arrows (0-2 overall, 0-1 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference) forged a tie at 54 apiece to send the game to overtime. The Yellow Jackets scored the first seven points in the extra session, then weathered an Ashland rally that sliced the lead to 64-63 in the final 30 seconds.

But Mount Vernon (2-0, 1-0) pulled away in the final moments to secure the victory.

Ashland sophomore Luke Denbow led all scorers with 31 points, while Mitch Heilman chipped in 18 points and senior Eli White notched 11.

Eban Boatwright and Blake Meyer topped Mount Vernon with 17 points each. Connor Fisher added 11 and junior forward Dayne Burgess pocketed 10 points.

Ashland travels to Massillon Washington tonight. The Yellow Jackets are home tonight against New Albany.
