Fredericktown senior Caleb Sheriff slides safely into third base against Amanda-Clearcreek in the Div. III district title game on May 27, 2021.

COLUMBUS — Weston Melick earned All-Ohio honors in football and basketball to begin his senior campaign.

This spring, back on the diamond after COVID-19 claimed his junior season, he completed the trifecta.

Melick was named first-team All-Ohio in Division IV by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association last week. The East Knox infielder batted .456 this season, recording 4 home runs and 26 RBI. He helped lead the Bulldogs to their first district title in school history.

Melick was one of four Knox County baseball players to earn All-Ohio honors this year. Two Fredericktown players made the Division III second-team list: seniors Ty Hatfield and Caleb Sheriff.

Hatfield, the team's catcher, batted .433 with 3 home runs and 26 RBI. Sheriff, an infielder, batted .600 with 3 home runs and 44 RBI. The duo helped lead Fredericktown to its fourth straight district title this spring.

Centerburg senior Dakota Baer also earned second-team Division III all-state honors. The outfielder batted .402 this season, leading the Trojans with 3 home runs, 24 RBI and 32 runs scored. He also stole a team-high 18 bases. Centerburg tied for fourth place in the Knox-Morrow Athletic Conference this year.

Elsewhere in north central Ohio, the postseason awards keep piling up for Lexington’s Chase Carter. The senior catcher was selected to the All-Ohio first team in Division II late last week.

An Ashland University recruit, Carter batted .463 with five home runs and 22 runs batted in. He had eight doubles and scored 21 runs for the Minutemen.

Shelby’s Marek Albert joined Carter on the All-Ohio first team in Division II. The senior, who will play football at the University of Charleston in Charleston, West Virginia, batted .446 and led the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference with a .716 slugging percentage while ranking second in the conference with a .567 on base percentage. He belted four home runs and knocked in 26 runs.

Marshall Shepherd and Blaine Bowman, Marek’s Shelby teammates, were both selected to the All-Ohio second team in Division II.

The MOAC Player of the Year, Shepherd was selected to the All-Ohio team as a utility player/designated hitter after batting a team-high .459 and leading the MOAC with 36 RBIs. He also was 6-0 on the mound with 60 strikeouts and a 1.69 earned run average.

A catcher, Bowman batted .446 with 25 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. As a pitcher, Bowman was 6-0 with 46 strikeouts and a 2.31 ERA.
