Monty C. Shira, 51, of Shelby formerly of Fredericktown passed away unexpectedly Monday afternoon, June 24, 2019 at his home.

He was born on September 17, 1967 in Mount Vernon to Phyllis (Statzer) Shira and the late Roger C. Shira.

Monty was a 1986 graduate of the Fredericktown High School. After graduation, Monty proudly served four years in the Marine Corps. He attended the Spartans School of Aeronautics. Monty was a Corrections Officer for the Marion Correctional Institution. Growing up, Monty participated in 4-H and enjoyed showing and racing horses. He was an avid Buckeyes fan.

Monty is survived by his children, Scott Crossley of Coshocton, Monica (Adam) Ridenbaugh of  Nashport and Malary (Nathan) Fry of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Rainier Crossley, Adam Jr. and Aaron Ridenbaugh, Tucker, Raelynn and Thatcher Fry; his mother, Phyllis; and a sister, Jody  (L. Pat) Mickley of Danville.

In addition to his father, Monty was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Cora Crossley.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2019 at the First Baptist Church, 22 East Sandusky St, Fredericktown with Pastor Patrick Bailey officiating. A private burial will be held in Forest Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service. The Knox County Joint Veterans Council will provide Military Honors at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Knox County 4-H Foundation or the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
