BELLVILLE: Kay “Memaw” Gerhart Stevens, 77, passed away at her Bellville home on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022 surrounded by her family.

Kay was born on April 12, 1944, in Bellville to Dayle Kermit & Blanche Pauline (Leedy) Gerhart. She was a 1962 graduate of Bellville High School and after meeting Roger W. Stevens on a blind date, the pair married on March 5, 1966.

She worked a few years at Prudential and 13 years as a clerk at Stoodts. Kay was a founding member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and a member of the Chestnut Chapel Club.

Kay had a passion for genealogy and researched all branches of her own family tree in addition to many friends and served as the attendance-taker at the Leedy family reunions. She enjoyed knitting, reading, making jewelry, and dining in restaurants.

Her favorite TV shows were Reba, CSI, Chrisley Knows Best, and General Hospital; favorite actor was Matthew McConaughey; she enjoyed the music of Colonial City Quartet and Trae & Whitney; and Kay was a lifelong Cleveland Indians fan.

Kay will be remembered for her kind and giving spirit. She volunteered at the BNOC and taught knitting there and at the Lexington Senior Center. She was active with aerobics and taught classes at Chapel Hill.

She was the “taxi driver” for the church ladies and neighborhood kids. She cherished her family and liked to spoil her grandkids. Kay’s nurturing and social approach to life was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by daughters Cheryl (Alan) Sheets of Bellville, Pam (Scott) Walters of Perrysville, and Lori (Ken) McKee of Bellville; grandchildren Stephanie (Chad) Lane, Shannon (Amanda) Sheets, Jacob (Carly) Walters, Johnathan Walters (Shelby Pipes), Bailey McKee, and Landen McKee; great-grandkids Garrett Lane, Norra Lane, Levi Sheets, and Jameson Sheets; her husband’s sister who was more like a daughter Sandy (Tom) Pollock; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roger and his parents to whom she was very close, Chester & Naomi Stevens, her infant son Bryan Keith Stevens, and her siblings Pauline, Howard, Don, and Marvin Gerhart.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Liberty Nursing Care and SouthernCare Hospice for the wonderful care and friendship shared with Kay.
