Johney M. Payne, age 76, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020 at his home.

He was born on Dec. 29, 1943 in Mount Vernon and was the son to the late Lloyd and Naomi (Talbott) Payne.

Johney will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a loving father, the honest and hardworking business owner and operator of Paynes Heating and Cooling for over 40 years (and genuinely thought of as the best furnace man around), lifelong Harley Davidson motorcycle fanatic, a fierce competitor in flat track racing, hot rod enthusiast and one of the greatest ever to get behind the wheel of a demolition derby car.

Johney is survived by his fiance, Debbie Slessinger; four children, Karen (Kevin) Steinmetz, Dale (Gayle) Payne, Wendy (Mike) Fry and Marc Slessinger; a sister, Kim Comer; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a nephew.
