Janet Louise (Beam) Detmer, 96, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away on Monday, Oct. 15, 2018 at the Country Club Retirement Campus.
She was born on May 5, 1922 in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Dr. Eugene and Vesta (Stephan) Beam.
Janet was a graduate of the Columbus School for Girls in 1940, and Ohio Wesleyan University in 1944. She was a member of Chi Gamma NU, Chemistry Honorary Society and Kappa Alpha Theta, women’s Social Fraternity. She married Grover H. Detmer on July 9, 1944 and while he served overseas and completed his education, she was employed at The Ohio State University as a Lab Technician in Hematology.
Janet was active for over 66 years in the First Congregational United Church of Christ, College Women’s Club, Daughters of American Colonist, and Kappa Alpha Theta Alumni Club. She had many interests and was an avid reader, loved music, science, gardening and art. In later years she led senior stretch classes at the Living Center.
She is survived by two daughters, Cynthia ( Walter) Sperry of Mount Vernon, Ohio, Caroline (Stanley Holmes) Detmer of Mount Vernon, Ohio; two grandchildren, Michael Wells of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jennifer (Russell)Sheriff of Fredericktown, Ohio; 4 great-grandchildren, Trenton and Troy Wells, Christopher Sheriff, and Heather (Jorge) Delgado; numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 3 p.m. until the time of a Celebration of Life Service starting at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ; 200 N. Main Street, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050, with Rev. Scott Elliott officiating. Burial will take place at later date.
