Eleanor J. Balcom, 86, of Gambier Road, Mount Vernon, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018 after a short illness.

She was born on Dec. 5, 1931 in Fredericktown, Ohio the daughter of Robert and Mabel (LaFever) Wertz of Chesterville.

Eleanor married Raymond Balcom on Jan. 15, 1954. They were blessed with two sons, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She could often be seen as the “demo” lady at local stores who offered you samples of delicious treats and she also enjoyed her time at the Station Break in Mount Vernon.

Eleanor is survived by her son Jeffrey (Kathy) Balcom; sisters-in-law, Oneta Balcom and Betty Wertz; grandchildren, Jody (Kyle) Thompson, Josh, John, Robert and Mary Balcom; great grandchildren, James, Madison and Logan Thompson and her feline companions Baxter and Peaches.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Balcom; a son, Steve and his wife Rita Balcom; granddaughter, Lori Emma; brother, James Wertz; brother-in-law, Carl Balcom and her canine companions Zoe and Lucy.

Friends may call on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. Pastor Richard Prater will be officiating. Burial will follow in Saint Johns Cemetery in Mount Vernon.

Memorial contributions in Eleanor’s name may be made to Lori Emma’s Earthly Angels Scholarship Fund in care of the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon and Knox County or to Kindred Hospice.
