MOUNT VERNON β€” Tanner Salyers is the next Knox County Recorder, succeeding Republican John Lybarger. Lybarger retired on May 31 after serving 30 years as recorder.

The local Republican Central Committee met on June 7 and appointed Salyers as Lybarger’s replacement. Other candidates were Tina Heibert, Clyde Kahrl, and Adam Taylor.

Salyers’ appointment opens up two positions: his at-large seat on Mount Vernon City Council and his spot on the Nov. 2, 2021, General Election ballot to run for city council.

Knox County Republican Party Chairman Thom Collier said the central committee members who live within the city will meet on June 17 at 6 p.m. to fill Salyers’ seat on city council.

β€œOnce that vote is taken, we may or may not at the same meeting appoint someone to the ballot position,” he said. β€œIf we are ready, we will appoint someone to fill the vacant spot on the ballot.”

The deadline to fill the ballot position is Aug. 9.

Both Salyers and his appointed replacement to city council must run for their respective seats in the November General Election.
