MOUNT VERNON – An inmate died Thursday morning shortly after arriving at the Knox County Jail.

Rick O. Black, 30, was brought to the Knox County Jail by the Mount Vernon Police Department at 7:14 a.m. Thursday, according to a press release from the Knox County Sheriff's Office. He had been arrested on outstanding warrants for aggravated possession of drugs and the possession of drug-abuse instruments.

Black entered a holding cell in the intake area at approximately 7:22 a.m., the press release stated. He was checked on by staff at 8:15 a.m.

When staff members checked on Black again at 8:32 a.m., "he was discovered unresponsive," according to the press release. Jail staff immediately began CPR and emergency units were requested.

Black was transported to Knox Community Hospital by the Mount Vernon Fire Department, where he was later pronounced dead at 9:06 a.m. Detectives and a chaplain representative personally notified family members.

"The investigation is ongoing," the statement read, "and the Knox County Coroner’s Office is providing assistance."
