ASHLAND — Two children were injured and a New Haven man arrested Thursday night after a two-vehicle crash involving a truck and a buggy in Ashland County, according to the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office.
Children ages 5 and 7 were injured in the incident, authorities stated. No report on their condition was available at the time of publication.
“Our thoughts and prayers go to the Amish family injured in this crash,” said Ashland County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy David Blake.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Jeffrey Fry, 58, was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence of a Drug or Alcohol, testing over the legal limit, and Assured Cleared Distance.. The suspect was transported to the Ashland County Jail where he submitted to a breathalyzer test. The results showed the driver to be two times over the legal limit.
The incident took place at approximately 6:31 p.m. on State Route 96 near Township Road 1443.
The Sheriff’s Office stated the 911 center received a call of a car vs buggy crash and the witness reported the driver was walking away.
Deputies learned the driver had rear-ended the buggy as they were west bound on State Route 96. The buggy had three working flashing lights on it and sustained heavy damage. The driver was operating a 2010 black Dodge truck which sustained damage to the front end.
When deputies arrived, they located the driver. During the interview with the suspect driver, deputies detected an odor of alcoholic beverage. A field sobriety test was completed in which the driver had failed the test, the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Ashland Fire and Rescue responded along with the Ashland County Sheriff’s Deputies.
The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind drivers to be vigilant while driving.
