MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Nazarene University President Dr. Henry W. Spaulding II, has announced the appointment of Brad Kochis as Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Advancement.
“Brad is an alumnus with broad knowledge of other alumni and will bring energy to the role. His experience as a pastor will position him to work with our alumni, churches and friends,” said Spaulding. “God is bringing gifted individuals to MVNU and Brad is a great example of what God is doing.”
Kochis has over 27 years of ministry experience that includes service as a youth pastor in churches including Clearfork Alliance Church, Bellville, Ohio; Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene, Ashland, Kentucky; Ironton First Church of the Nazarene, Ironton, Ohio; and Gracepoint Church of the Nazarene in Loganville, Georgia.
In 2003, Kochis and his family moved to Ohio to plant a church with the South Central Ohio District Church of the Nazarene where he has served as lead pastor at the Refinery Church of the Nazarene in Columbus, Ohio.
“We are so excited to have Brad on our team. He cares deeply about Christian higher education and has a deep passion for MVNU,” said Vice President for University Relations James Smith. “He already has strong relationships with alumni from across the decades of our existence, and he is eager to form new ones.
"He is a connector who thrives when he is building new relationships and helping others do the same. I am thrilled to watch him use those skills to engage our alumni in meaningful and life-giving ways.”
Kochis said one reason for his interest in the position is the deep love for his wife, Melissa and a shared passion for the university and its mission.
“We believe in investing in and for the next generation," Kochis said. "MVNU made a lasting impact in our lives and we want to help the university continue doing so in the lives of others for decades to come.”
The responsibilities of the position include oversight of the Alumni Relations Program, building relationships with and between alumni, collaborating with other campus offices to create internship and employment opportunities, and strengthening alumni giving.
“During the interview process it became evident that Brad’s entrepreneurial spirit will be a key strength in this role,” said Smith. “We want to engage our alumni in practical ways, like coming back to share their knowledge in classrooms and other co-curricular opportunities.
"We would love to see these connections lead to internships for current students, job opportunities for graduates and mutually beneficial opportunities for alumni and current students. Brad is the type of person who will dream alongside our alumni and discover ideas we’ve never thought of before.”
Kochis brings with him a unique perspective not only as a former student with previous leadership roles in the church, but also as a former member of the MVNU Board of Trustees. It is this experience that will allow him to foster increased connections with Nazarene and non-Nazarene churches.
“We love Brad’s experience as a church planter and former MVNU board of trustee member. His election to that role is one example of how Brad is viewed — as a leader in our denomination,” Smith said. “His church is full of MVNU alumni of all ages who were drawn to his vision and drive. We anticipate that Brad will partner with churches to develop creative ways to connect with our alumni and other friends of the university.”
Kochis will officially be joining MVNU on Oct. 28, although he has been on campus assisting with preparations for Homecoming, Nov. 15-16.
“As a university we desire to continue adding value to our alumni long after their time as a student has ended. To do so requires collaborative effort and focused intentionality. It’s my hope to create engaging and beneficial environments that current students, alumni and friends of MVNU want to be a part of,” said Kochis.
He and his wife, Melissa, are relocating to the Mount Vernon area. They have two children, Nathan, 21, and Rachel, 18.
