MOUNT VERNON – A national retail chain has filled the former J.C. Penney's storefront on Coshocton Avenue.
Burkes Outlet, which has over 400 stores across the U.S., opened its new Mount Vernon location at 1530 Coshocton Ave. on Monday. It will serve as an anchor tenant in the Knox Village Square shopping center, alongside Big Lots, which opened Sept. 3.
Burkes Outlet sells clothing, accessories, beauty products and home decor. According to its website, the company originated in the south and now serves communities in 14 states, from Nevada to Virginia. It has opened two locations in Ohio this year – one in Wilmington, a city of 12,401 in the southwest part of the state, and one in Mount Vernon.
Cory Richesson, manager of the Mount Vernon location, said the store will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony involving the Knox County Chamber of Commerce on Friday. The store is currently hiring, Richesson said, and plans to employ 25 to 30 people.
J.C. Penney moved out of the 22,542-square-foot storefront in May 2018. Burkes Outlet signed its lease in December and has spent recent months renovating the property, which sits between Hibbett Sports and Aaron's.
Burkes Outlet prides itself on offering a wide range of products for low prices, according to its website. Richesson believes this will make the store a hit in the Knox County community, where it will rival stores like Marshalls.
“It’s gonna be great for the community because our average ticket item is $10. Usually anything that’s $25 or over is expensive for us," Richesson said. "So I think it’ll do really well for this community ... I just think that it’ll really take off."
Burkes Outlet is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
