MOUNT VERNON – Local shoppers are flocking to the soon-to-be-closed MC Sports sporting good store on Coshocton Avenue, which opened only four months ago.

MC Sports is closing all 66 of its stores across the Midwest, according to a statement released today by the company. There are 11 stores in Ohio. The Michigan-based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Feb. 14.

Signs that read “store closing,” “going out of business,” and “everything must go” were recently placed in the front windows of the Mount Vernon store.

Calls to the company regarding the Mount Vernon store have not been returned.

An employee at the Mount Vernon store, who identified himself as a member of management, told KnoxPages.com that he had no comment on the future of the store when asked earlier this week.

The store, located at 939 Coshocton Avenue, opened last October. Construction on the 24,000 square foot building was completed shortly before the store opening.

When the store opened, it had about 20 employees, about half of whom were seasonal employees.

In addition to sporting goods, the MC Sports stores sell a variety of other items including hunting, fishing, and camping equipment.
