MOUNT VERNON — The 2021 holiday shopping season experience will be full of new and exciting attractions.

Sponsored by Knox Community Hospital, Main Street Mount Vernon is happy to announce the first ever Downtown Mount Vernon Gingerbread Forest – complete with gingerbread people and four gingerbread houses as part of Habitat for Humanity of Knox County Playhouse Project.

Sponsored by local businesses and painted by local artists, the gingerbread people and houses will begin their display Saturday, Nov. 27 as part of the Shop Small Celebration sponsored by Ariel Corporation.

Kicking off at 11 a.m., the Shop Small Saturday Celebration is the official beginning to this winter’s shopping season.

To support the merchants of downtown Mount Vernon, the community is invited to the “Stocking Stuffer Sidewalk Sale.” The shops will be able to bring their products out on to the sidewalks in the central business district to show off all they have to offer.

From 2-3:30 p.m., Main Street is arranging for carols to be sung from the Main Stage located on Public Square in front of PNC Bank.

Special presentations will be held during this period of time to recognize our sponsors and Habitat for Humanity for their partnership in the Gingerbread Playhouse Project and the Gingerbread Forest.

Returning to downtown for the first time in two years, the Annual Holiday Parade sponsored by Park National Bank is set for 3:30pm. With registration and check in located in the Living Center parking lot (201 North Main Street), the parade route will start at the intersection of North Main Street and Sugar Street.

Check in for the parade begins at 2:30 p.m. for all participants. If you, or your organization is interested in participating the parade, visit mainstreetmountvernon.com for more information.

Santa and Mrs. Claus have sent a letter to Main Street Mount Vernon letting us know they plan to be in attendance for the Annual Holiday Parade and the Square Lighting Ceremony sponsored by the Mount Vernon News immediately following.

After being displayed through Christmas, the gingerbread houses will be donated to local families identified by Habitat for Humanity of Knox County.
