MANSFIELD — Regent Joyce Vanatter welcomed members and guests to the last Jared Mansfield Chapter DAR meeting until September at the Gorman Nature Center on June 8.

A traditional covered dish luncheon was shared and enjoyed by all in attendance.

Margie Warner, Chapter Scholarship chair introduced the three scholarship winners and presented them with a $300 — chapter scholarship and a chapter certificate.

The students were: Leah Turner, a graduate of Fredericktown High School who is enrolled at NCSC in Physical Therapy for the fall of 2018; Julia Newberry, a graduate of Lexington High School, a third-year student at Ashland University Dwight Schar College of Nursing; and Justin Taylor, a graduate of Mapleton High School, in his final year of a four-year program to receive a Doctorate of Nursing Practice and to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Several chapter members were recognized and presented certificates. A 20-year of membership to Marilyn Parr Dinges; a 10-year of membership to Carol McGinty Au and Nanci May Trippett. Certificates were given to Nanci Nicholls Kurtz for her 93rd birthday June 16 and to Marilyn Parr Dinges for her 92nd birthday on June 18.

Leah Turner is a 2018 graduate of Fredericktown High School. Leah was very active in high school and athletic activities, including Student Council, National Honor Society, Concert band, volleyball and basketball. She is also involved in her church and does various communities service projects through her high school. Leah is the daughter of Dennis and Lori Turner and is enrolled at NCSC in Physical Therapy for the fall of 2018.

Julia Newberry is a student nurse at Ashland University’s Dwight Schar College of Nursing College. Julia is in the schools Honors Program, an EMT for Mansfield Ambulance Service, and as BLS instructor for the American Heart Association. Julia is the daughter of Todd and Jodi Newberry and will be beginning her third year at the Ashland University’s Dwight Schar College of Nursing College. 

Justin Taylor is in his last year of a 4-year program to receive a Doctorate of Nursing Practice and also be a Family Nurse Practitioner. He will graduate in May 2019. Justin is currently a Charge Nurse, Cardiovascular ICU, OhioHealth, Mansfield Hospital. Justin has taken 12 Medical Missions Outreach (MMO) trips, a ministry providing free medical care to 10 countries since 2012. Justin is the son of Stephanie Kozak of Polk, Ohio and also works as a Dietary Assistant at Kingston Healthcare in Ashland and mentors new staff at Kingston.

A memorial was read in honor of member Mildred Baker Blaney who passed away.

The 2018-2019-chapter yearbooks were provided to members at the close of the meeting.

Jason Larson Director of Richland County Park Service presented a very interesting and informative program on Conservation/Pollinators. Jason highlighted the various butterflies, moths, skippers, hummingbirds, bees and wasps that are helpful for the pollination of our food sources.

He explained the many types of plant life that are required for the attraction of these various animals of Ohio. Jason provided publications to the members from the Division of Wildlife, Ohio Department of Natural Resources explaining in further details the needs for pollinators.

The next Chapter DAR meeting will be held on Friday Sept 14, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS) at 611 St. Rt. 97 W, Bellville, Ohio.
