MOUNT VERNON – Today is Ash Wednesday which marks the start of the Christian season of Lent in preparation before Easter. Lent is a time when many Christians observe a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ – his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrection.
St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon will once again offer Lenten Fish dinners Fridays February 21 through March 27 at 206 E. Chestnut St from 4:30 to 7 p.m. On Ash Wednesday, and all of the Fridays of Lent, Catholics over the age of 14 are required to abstain from meat. Proceeds from the fish dinners will benefit the school and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
