The CDE consists of two parts: a multiple-choice online test and a problem solving practicum. The written test is designed to test members’ understanding of economic principles in farm business management. The problem solving practicum portion is set up to determine the team members’ ability to apply economic principles of farm business management to actual problems and to define the decisions that need to be made.
The Farm Business Management Career Development Event is a very challenging competition designed to test students abilities in making management decisions in agriculture. The top 10 teams in the state receive awards.

FFA attends D7 officer training
East Knox FFA members recently elected new officers for the 2021-2022 FFA year. These students will run the business operations of the chapter for the next year.
They are President Alexandria Magers, Vice President Andrew Poff, Secretary Hailey Frazee, Treasurer Josh Henwood, Reporter Brayden Lemley, Sentinel Ethan Phillis, and Student Advisor Trenton Comer. They took over duties of their office at the March FFA meeting.
The newly elected officers attended District 7 FFA officer Training via a Zoom Meeting at Fairfield Union High School, where they were instructed on the duties and responsibilities of their respective offices. State FFA President, Bethany Starlin, from Logan FFA addressed the group. Approximately 100 FFA members representing some of the 31 schools in FFA District 7 were in attendance.
FFA 2nd and 5th in area III Envirothon
East Knox FFA members Alexandria Magers, Andrew Poff, Nic Steinwender, Dustin Springer, and Hailey Frazee recently competed in the 2021 Area III Envirothon held as an online event where they placed second out of twenty-eight teams that participated.
Each school may enter two teams and East Knox FFA’s other team consisting of Addison Crouch, Joci Totten, Allan Dolby, Logan Adams, and James Bristow finished fifth. The top two teams in the Area advance to the state competition.
The ENVIROTHON is designed to stimulate, reinforce and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources among high school students.
The Envirothon tests students’ knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and current environmental issues. In addition, the Envirothon encourages cooperative decision-making and team building. While each student on an Envirothon team is challenged to contribute his or her personal best, the score that counts at the end of the Envirothon is the team score.
Five “Area Envirothons” were conducted around Ohio in April with the top two teams from each of these Area competitions progressing to the Ohio Envirothon on June 14-16. One of the East Knox FFA teams placed second in the Area III competition so they, along with first place Coshocton County Career Center, will represent the Area at the State competition.
The Ohio Envirothon is sponsored by the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (OFSWCD) in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Natural resource and environmental specialists from many agencies, organizations, colleges, universities, park districts and businesses devise the Envirothon questions and staff the various test stations.
The Ohio Envirothon is financed by grants, donations from businesses and through contributions to the Don Rehl Memorial Envirothon Fund. Many local businesses also provide services and products in support of Area and Ohio Envirothons.
This is the eighteenth time in the 33 year history of the State Envirothon that East Knox FFA has had a team in the event. East Knox FFA won the inaugural competition in 1989 and has placed in the top-10 on several occasions since.
