ASHLAND — Two Ashland boys basketball players earned All-Ohio honors Tuesday when the big-school teams were introduced.

In Division I, Ashland’s Luke Denbow was a second-team pick. The 6-foot-1 junior guard averaged averaged 23 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.3 assists a game. He scored his 1,000th career point as a junior and is on pace to become the program’s career scoring leader.

Denbow’s teammate, senior Eli White, was an honorable-mention choice. White averaged 17.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists a game for the Arrows (18-5) who reached the district tournament.

In Division II, T.J. Pugh capped his high school career in style.

Shelby’s 6-foot-6 senior swingman earned a spot on the All-Ohio first team.

Pugh had a historic senior season for the Whippets. He averaged 25.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 3.1 steals a game, leading the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference in all four categories. What’s more, he led Shelby to its first district title since 1999. The Whippets (20-4) won the MOAC title outright and reached the Sweet 16 before falling to eventual state semifinalist Lima Shawnee in the regional semifinals.

“The first time in 22 years, that’s something crazy,” Pugh said after leading Shelby past Norwalk in the district championship game. “Our team is just a big family. We love to win and we love to play together. It’s just so easy when you’ve got a team like that.”

For his efforts, Pugh was selected the MOAC Player of the Year and the District 6 Player of the Year in Division II.

Pugh’s teammate, fellow senior Cody Lantz, was an All-Ohio honorable-mention pick. A 6-foot-3 guard headed to Rio Grande, Lantz averaged 16 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.4 steals a game.

Ontario’s Griffin Shaver was a special-mention selection in Division II. The 6-foot-1 senior guard averaged 16.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.8 steals a game for the Warriors, who won a sectional championship before falling in overtime to Norwalk in the district semifinals. Shaver will play football at Ashland University next fall.
