MOUNT VERNON — Many residents have aging items they want to protect and pass along to future generations: family photos, newspaper clippings, old books, a child’s blankie, or a grandmother’s wedding dress.

Typically, however, they don’t know how to keep them safe. Many have things like cassettes or VHS tapes that, despite holding cherished memories, they are not able to play, let alone preserve.

Luckily, professionals can help.

The Knox County Historical Society invites community members to the museum on Nov. 4 to learn from experts about the preservation and conservation of materials.

Robin Goodman of the Gund Gallery and Elizabeth Williams-Clymer of the Chalmers Library Special Collections and Archives will be on hand to tell audience members about their work and about how museums, libraries, and archives maintain their collections.

They will also suggest how people can take care of their belongings on their own. Audience members are welcome to bring in items (unless those items are too fragile to travel) and ask for suggestions about how they should take care of them.

The discussion will occur at 7:30 p.m. at the Knox County Historical Museum, 875 Harcourt Road. For more information contact the museum or call (740) 393-5247.
