MOUNT VERNON — The City of Mount Vernon, in partnership with Knox County Recycling and Litter Prevention, invites Knox County residents to clear out their clutter and participate in 2026 Fall Clean Up Day.

This event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. (or until dumpsters reach capacity) in front of the Schnormeier Events Center in Ariel-Foundation Park.

Participants can bring unlimited loads for a flat fee of $20 per load. Payment is accepted via cash, check, or credit card. Checks should be made payable to the “City of Mount Vernon” with “Fall Clean Up” in the memo line.

Due to the high volume of interest, those planning to participate should plan to arrive early as the event will conclude promptly at noon or when the dumpsters are at capacity. During the Spring Clean-Up, all of the dumpsters were filled by 9:30 a.m.

To ensure an efficient and safe environment for all participants, several regulations will be in place during the event. All materials must be unloaded by hand, as trailers and mechanical dumping are strictly prohibited.

Participants are responsible for the physical unloading of their vehicles and must provide their own protective equipment, such as gloves and eye protection. However, volunteers will be on-site to help guide traffic and offer general assistance.

Certain materials cannot be accepted during the Fall Clean Up Day. Prohibited items include hazardous materials such as toxic waste, asbestos, lead-acid batteries, bio-hazardous waste, and appliances containing Freon or CFCs.

The site cannot accept automotive or industrial components (tires, oil, auto parts, or steel drums), yard waste, construction materials, ashes, and liquids.
