MOUNT VERNON — The Music Department at Mount Vernon Nazarene University invites the community to an afternoon of engaging music performed by MVNU’s instrumental ensembles.
Featuring the talents of both students and community members, the free concert will take place Saturday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium.
The MVNU Jazz Band, under the direction of Chuck Dettmar, will open the program with Don Menza’s “Groovin’ Hard,” featuring the ensemble’s full saxophone section.
The jazz program will continue with Michel Legrand’s “I Will Wait for You,” featuring vocalist Christiana Schuler, before concluding with Steve Allen’s “This Could Be the Start of Something Big,” arranged by Mark Taylor.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will follow with a program inspired by the 250th anniversary of the United States. The ensemble will begin with Brian Balmages’ “Eternal Flame,” commissioned to honor the Eternal Flame memorial in Zanesville.
The program will continue with William Schuman’s “Chester” and Frank Ticheli’s arrangement of “Shenandoah.” The ensemble also will perform music by John Williams from the film The Cowboys before closing with Harold Walters’ “Instant Concert,” which features melodies from 30 well-known classical works and songs.
Rounding out the afternoon, the concert will also feature performances by the Flute Choir and String Ensemble, directed by Jennifer Packard and Chris Japikse respectively.
