MOUNT VERNON— Soroptimist of Mount Vernon and Knox County invite the community to warm up with a hearty meal during the Halloween season while supporting a great cause.
Between 4 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 10, 10% of sales at the South Main Street Wendy’s will benefit the club’s programs for women and girls.
The community can also purchase Wendy’s Boo! Books® and receive Wendy coupons. Ninety cents of the purchase supports the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and its work finding loving, permanent homes for than 16,500 children waiting in foster care.
Children referred to the program are up to three times more likely to be adopted. This includes older children, children with special needs, and siblings who too often are overlooked.
Wendy’s is located at 522 S. Main St. Donna Hochstetler chaired the event.
Resources and opportunities for women and girls
Wendy’s founder, Dave Thomas, believed “everyone has an obligation to put back into life more than what they take out.”
Soroptimist of Mount Vernon and Knox County’s vision is to support women and girls toward having the resources and opportunities to reach their full potential and live their dreams.
Programs include Live Your Dream education and training awards presented at the 2026 EmpowHER event sponsored by New Directions, the domestic abuse Shelter for Knox County. Recent winners will continue their education at OSU and Columbus State Community College.
The club’s Uplift HER program focuses on an obstacle, such as partner violence, that women and girls face on their path to formal education and economic empowerment.
Soroptomist also empowers young women in community sports. The Reach Your Dreams program sponsors a Mount Vernon High School girls softball team. This year’s team was runner-up in a spring tournament.
Soroptomist believes the benefits of playing sports while empowering young women are endless: higher self-esteem, resilience in reaching goals, better communication skills, being a better team player, and a strong work ethic.
