Hilbert O’Neil Myers, Jr., age 74, of Mount Vernon, passed away unexpectedly on August 12, 2026, at Knox Community Hospital.
Hilbert was born on October 6, 1951, at Mercy Hospital in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to Hilbert and Helen Myers. He was affectionately known as “Junior” by his family and close friends.
Hilbert attended Amity and Mount Vernon City Schools. He continued his education and became an occupational therapist, working in both Gallipolis and Columbus. He also served as a coach for the Special Olympics, where he had the opportunity to work with and support children with disabilities.
Hilbert was a member of the Kokosing Elks (I.B.P.O.E.W.) #1085, where he served as Tiler and Trustee, overseeing and managing the organization’s property located on West Gambier Street.
After returning to Mount Vernon, Hilbert began working for the Mount Vernon News, where he remained for more than 30 years before retiring.
Hilbert enjoyed playing pool, traveling, cheering on the Cleveland Browns, and spending time around cars and animals. He was passionate about many things and was never afraid to share his thoughts and opinions.
Hilbert had a kind, quiet, and gracious nature and was always willing to help others, especially his family. He enjoyed being included and kept informed about family activities and gatherings. His children, Nathan and Hilary, were his heart, followed closely by his grandchildren, Breylen and Jaylyn. His eyes would light up and a big smile would appear whenever he saw his family, especially if a banana split was involved.
Hilbert is survived by his longtime companion of 30 years, Tera Fraser; his children, Nathan Charles O’Neil Myers and Hilary Lee Myers; grandchildren, Breylen and Jaylyn Myers; sisters, Pastor Shirley (James) Adams, Evangelist Joyce B. Hogan, and Judith M. Hill; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many beloved friends.
In addition to his parents, Hilbert was preceded in death by an infant son; his brother, Richard Herndon; and brothers-in-law, John Hogan and Gary Hill.
