MOUNT VERNON — How is your garden growing? Are you looking for more space for plants?
The next Meet me in the Garden learning session will focus on vertical growing techniques with Erich Haller, a gardener at Arch Park community garden, on Tuesday, July 21 at 6 p.m.
Haller is a native of Ohio and began gardening with his grandparents at a young age. He will be discussing common plants and vegetables that grow vertically, how to grow using “the three sisters” method, and how to appropriately support vertical growers.
Come learn about ways to garden in all three dimensions using a fence, trellis or other structure. Participants can also see a variety of ways gardeners at Arch Park have been ‘growing up,’ including a bean teepee, bamboo trellis,’ and the new garden arch.
In June, Sabrina Schirtzinger, OSU Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator provided information to gardeners about both beneficial bugs and the harmful bugs that are a nuisance in the garden.
She gave local gardeners gathered at Faith Lutheran community garden information about how to deal with pests in the garden. The first line of defense is to watch for signs of infestations such as white cabbage moths which appear ahead of cabbage worms.
Many pests, such as flea beetles, are harder to spot. Some, like the tomato horn worm, pupate in the ground and actually glow in the dark, so evening is the best time to find them and remove them from your plants.
The OSU Extension can provide assistance to gardeners with pest questions and concerns. The Knox County Extension office is located at 160 Columbus Road in Mount Vernon.
