Michael Ray “Gruber” Grubaugh, age 76, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at his home surrounded by family.

He was born on January 30, 1950, in Mount Vernon and was the son to the late James E. and Mary F. (Purdy) Grubaugh.

Michael Grubaugh came into this world under controversy and left with a bang. Born January 30th according to his birth certificate. But his mother always claimed he was born on January 31st. Years of debate ensued and the 30th came out victorious. In true Mike Grubaugh fashion, he held out until the 4th of July so he could go out with a bang and a party fit for a king.

The world knew the Michael Grubaugh who was a businessman, mechanic, high school football all-American, son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and all other life accomplishments. Like Superman was Clark Kent, our Superman has Pops and Gruber. The Mike Grubaugh the world needs to know. The father who gave his love and time unconditionally. Sacrifices made to make their lives better, no matter his own personal cost he was always present. A calm in the storm and a rock when things were falling around you. His pride for his children overflowed. You would think nothing in this world would make him any prouder. Then he became a grandfather and Pop was born! His love for these women was palpable, you could feel it in the air. When they were around. His presence was constant and always available for whatever was needed. His kindness and personality transferred to them in a way the world can be proud of.

To his friends it’s always Gruber! He always said you needed to break up the work week. Not one to shy away from a good time you could find him on Wednesdays at the golf course or bowling alley. Maybe catch him at the Elks or the Moose, willing to crack a joke at any time, give you a smirk or a goofy face.

The world will miss the man he was, but he will live on in all that knew him.

Please wear a Hawaiian shirt in his honor to the calling hours and service if you want.

Mike is survived by his wife, Brenda (Grennell) Grubaugh; a son, Micha (Robin) Grubaugh; a daughter, Lisa (Scott) Shaw; three grandchildren, Olivia (Justin) Pursel, Hallee Shaw, Annaliese (Wyatt) Shaw; brothers, Doug (Soni) Grubaugh and David (Margie) Grubaugh; a great-granddaughter expected in December 2026 – Baby E.; step-grandchildren, Ally Jenkins, Tanner (Kaylie) Jenkins, Tyler Jenkins; bonus grandchildren, Makena Laslo and Kaitlyn (Jessie) Gilbert; bonus great-grandchildren, Kayden, Karter, and Kaylie; the mother of his children, Lori (Bill) Grubaugh; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends.
