CHARLES ENSIL KUNKEL
Born September 21, 1948, at Mercy Hospital Mt. Vernon, Died December 12, 2025, at Kings Daughter Hospital.
Preceded in death by his Parents: Ivan and Marguerite (Frye) Kunkel, Wife: Deborah Kunkel Brother: James C. Kunkel and his wife Margaret Ann Kunkel, Nephew: Kevin Kunkel.
He will be missed by his brother: Harold Kunkel and his nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his Kentucky family, his Elks Club family and his friends.
Charles graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1966. He prided himself on being part of the winning Yellow Jackets football team. He graduated in 1970 from Rio Grande College in business. He remained active with his Rio Grande fraternity and was involved with the Archon Golf Outing to this day. He received his Masters degree from the University of Michigan.
Charlie has spent his life working with people who needed assistance beginning with the Department of MR/DD in Columbus and evolving into managing and co owning an assisted living home first in a partnership in Cleveland and for over 20 years developing, owning and operating in partnership with Sharon Hartwig four Close to Home Assisted Living facilities.
Charlie was an avid Ohio State and Browns Fan all his life and spent many an hour analyzing the games. He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending time at his beloved “Lake House” at Dale Hollow. He enjoyed traveling and loved hot climates.
He will be missed by all.
A graveside service will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 1:30 PM at Quarry Chapel Cemetery in Gambier, Ohio, officiated by Deacon Tim Birie.
