MOUNT VERNON — Several cadets of the Knox County Airport Cadet Flight, Civil Air Patrol, received promotions during a ceremony held Monday, March 2 at the Knox County Airport.
Promoted to Cadet Senior Airman upon completion of the Mary Feik Achievement were Cadet Airmen First Class Benjamin Steele, Jenna Jerkowitz, Lukas Yarman and Seth Yarman.
The Mary Feik Achievement is named after Civil Air Patrol Colonel Mary Feik (1924-1916) a pioneer in aircraft engineering and mechanics, as well as being a pilot and aircraft restorer.
During World War II she became an expert on many military aircraft and taught aircraft maintenance for the US Army Air Corp. She was the first woman engineer in research and development in the Air Technical Service Commands Engineering Division at Wright Field, Ohio.
The Knox County Airport Cadet Flight meets every Monday evening at 6 p.m. at the Knox County Airport terminal building.
The Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program is open to youth ages 12 to 18. The program focuses on Leadership, Aerospace Education, Physical Fitness and Character Development.
