Constitution Day, September 17, was highlighted by Lucy Knox Chapter members,
Mulberry Church and the public with a nationwide program, Bells Across America.
At 4 p.m. bells were rung in Mount Vernon at the Mulberry Church to mark the 238
anniversary of the reading the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia.

Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr issued the proclamation commemorating Constitution
Week, September 17 – 23 in Mount Vernon. In the proclamation all citizens were urged
to read the Constitution and reflect on the privilege of being an American citizen. He
read the proclamation to all in attendance.
The Preamble of the Constitution was read by all attending the event as well as ringing of
bells.
Middle and high school history and social studies teachers in Mount Vernon City
Schools and all county schools were given teaching materials to use in their classes this
week.
During the remainder of Constitution Week the public is urged to visit our educational
displays at the public libraries in Mount Vernon, Fredericktown and Centerburg.
