Hip osteoarthritis is caused by the deterioration of cartilage that covers the ends of the bone. When the cartilage is gone, you are left with bone-on-bone contact. This contact, similar to an exposed tooth nerve, is very painful, causing swelling, stiffness, and a limited range of motion with the hip joint.
