MOUNT VERNON — Retired Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee brought his unique comedy routine to the Glenn A Gallagher Center Tuesday night for the annual Buckeye Spirit Event. The dining room was a sea of scarlet and grey as Gee began his remarks by saying, “I love Notre Dame!” The opening comment was an apparent reference to his controversial slam on Notre Dame at an OSU trustees meeting last December.

Gee kept the audience in stitches as he read a few emails from students. He also talked about how education is changing and that the American dream is still that education should be available to everyone. On politics, Gee said our government in Washington doesn’t work and called for compromise, common ground and collaboration.

The event featured silent and live auctions, a tailgate style dinner and an appearance by members of the The Ohio State Marching Band. The band performed traditional OSU favorites, including Carmen Ohio.

Scholarship money is raised each year at this event which is awarded to Knox County students studying at OSU. The 2013 scholarship recipients were introduced. They are Whiteney Hawk, Daniel Tharp, Tyler Zeller, Cierra Light, and Kaitlyn Boggs.
