MOUNT VERNON — A dozen citizens turned out at Thursday’s listening tour session to learn more about Mount Vernon’s new police station on Sychar Road.

The session was the first on the city’s listening tour explaining three new municipal projects: the police station, courthouse and justice center, and city annex.

Residents asked questions about the station’s proposed cost, square footage, and how the city decided on the Sychar Road location.

Other topics included revenue sources to pay for the station, availability and community use of the proposed shooting range, and the location of the impound lot in relation to the station.

Police Chief Robert Morgan said he would like to break ground on the station yet this year. However, he acknowledged that might be a bit optimistic.

Thursday’s session involved only the police station. The city will conduct two more listening tour sessions relating to the station:

•Saturday, Jan. 19, 9 to 10:30 a.m., Happy Bean on South Main Street

•Thursday, Jan. 23, 6 to 7:30 p.m., City Hall

Residents can participate in an online survey about the buildings. Click here to access the survey.

Residents can also submit comments or questions to the city’s safety-service director at questions@mountvernonohio.org or 740-393-9520.
