MANSFIELD — It wasn’t the outcome Chris Marshall hoped for, but the lessons learned will serve him well.

Centerburg’s 150-pound senior fell to Ontario’s Mason Turnbaugh 10-5 in the finals of the 62nd J.C. Gorman Invitational Saturday evening inside Mansfield Senior’s Pete Henry Gym.

The Gorman title was the third for Turnbaugh, who placed third at last year’s Division II state meet at 138 pounds. Marshall was the Division III state runner-up at 138 last March.

“I just didn’t get to my offense,” Marshall said. “There are definitely things I can take away from this.

“This will make me work harder in practice and get me ready for the postseason.”

Marshall reached the finals with a 1-0 win over Sandusky Perkins freshman Law Davlin in the semifinals Saturday morning. Marshall was 3-1 on the weekend and stands at 14-2.

“I would say I’m further ahead this year than I was last year at this time, but I’m still not where I want to be,” Marshall said. “I feel like I’ve got my defense down, but I need to improve on my offense while I’m on my feet.”

Cory Climer, Centerburg’s sophomore 113-pounder, finished eighth after a loss to Marion Elgin’s Aiden Cervantes in the seventh-place match. Climer was 3-3 on the weekend and is 10-6 on the year.
