Gary Daniel Hill, 80, of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Knox Community Hospital, holding the hand of his loving wife, Judith. He was born to Daniel and Constance (Adams) Hill.
Gary attended Mount Vernon City Schools and furthered his education at Central State College (HBCU) to be a Mortician. At the age of 8, he began his first job delivering the Pittsburgh Courier newspaper. After college, he worked for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Washington, DC. Upon returning to Ohio, he joined P.P.G. Industries before becoming a Highway Inspector with the Ohio Department of Transportation District 5, where he dedicated over 20 years before retiring. He also owned the Good Times Bar on Ohio Avenue in Mount Vernon for a time.
A longtime member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Gary had a passion for sports, particularly baseball, and later enjoyed tennis, golf, and auto racing. He was an avid fan of OSU football and had a fondness for classic cars, music, cooking, and barbecuing. He was known for his playful nature. His favorite color was green, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents Daniel and Constance (Adams) Hill and his brother, Brent (Patches) Hill.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Judith Marie Hill; daughters Michelle Tiffany Renee Duncan of Maryland and Ebony Bernice Robinson of Ohio; sisters Constance C. Medley and Brenda D. Hill of Florida; brother Carlos (Denise) Hill of Ohio; grandchildren Petty Officer First Class Marquan and Charley Carter (US Navy) of Washington, Staff Sergeant Damon and Jassmin Bass (US Army) of Texas; five great-grandchildren, Cameron, Cailyn Carter, Sophia, Damon III, Sebastian Bass; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the Apostolic Faith Church, 801 West High St., Mount Vernon, with Pastor District Elder Eddie L. Massey officiating.
