MOUNT VERNON — The traffic pattern on West Burgess will change temporarily to accommodate tenants moving into The Grad apartment complex on North Mulberry. It currently is a one-way street eastbound.

Safety-service Director Tanner Salyers said West Burgess Street between North Main and North Mulberry will temporarily become two-way. The change takes effect Wednesday, July 17.

“This is only temporary for 90 days,” Salyers told city council members on Monday. “This is to accommodate the new traffic as more and more people start to move into The Grad.”

Salyers said a more significant change is on the horizon with West Hamtramck Street, a one-way street westbound.

The city plans to issue a 90-day temporary traffic change on West Hamtramck between North Sandusky and North Main.

“We’ll be taking that from a one-way to a two-way, and we will be eliminating street parking,” Salyers said. “We will be alerting residents and allowing them accommodations.”

The city previously allowed two-way traffic on the street between Sandusky and Main streets to accommodate construction traffic at The Grad.

Salyers has the authority to enact 90-day temporary traffic changes. He anticipates permanently changing that section of West Hamtramck to two-way traffic to accommodate the apartment complex’s growth.

“Right now, you’ve got 39 units in The Grad. The anticipation, if you look at the site plan, there is a Phase 2 to be built. So we anticipate more traffic,” he said.

Salyers said the 90-day temporary change allows officials to resolve issues and bring a permanent plan to city council.
