ONTARIO — The chase for the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference crown isn’t quite over yet.
Carter Walters fired a complete-game six-hitter as Ontario knocked off Highland 2-0 at Ontario on Wednesday.
The Fighting Scots (21-3, 10-3) secured no less than a share of their third straight MOAC title with a 3-0 win over the Warriors (13-9, 9-5) on Tuesday. Highland can still win the outright championship with a victory over Marion Harding on Saturday.
A Highland loss, coupled with a Clear Fork win over River Valley on Thursday, would create a tie atop the MOAC standings. What’s more, Shelby and Galion still have a home-and-home series Friday and Saturday. Both the Whippets and Tigers are 8-4 in MOAC play, a game behind Clear Fork (9-4).
Walters struck out two and walked one. He faced the minimum through the first three-plus innings before giving up a one-out single to Highland’s Kort Sears in the fourth.
Ontario gave Walters all the run support he would need in the home half of the fifth. Carter Weaver stroked a one-out single to left and stole second before scoring on Jake Chapman’s RBI-double.
The Warriors added an insurance run the the sixth. Ian Rachel drew a one-out walk and moved to second when James Mahon was hit by a pitch. Rachel scored on Peyton Dzugan’s RBI-single to left.
Dzugan led the Warios with a pair of hits, including a double. Weaver had two hits, while Mahon, Chapman and Bryson Shoots all had a hit.
Sears, Jayden Collins, Zach Church, Hayden Kline, Evan Johnson and Hendrick Karya all had hits for the Fighting Scots.
Church took the loss for Highland. He gave up a run on six hits in five innings of work while striking out six and walking one.
