Stephen Browne Leachman, 66, of Fredericktown, Ohio, retired Westlake Police Captain, passed April 7, 2024, after a courageous 14-year long battle with cancer.
Steve Jr, as he was called by his family, graduated from Lakewood High School in 1976. He received his Criminal Justice bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green State University in 1980.
Steve was a devoted member of the Westlake Police Department from 1981-2010. He retired after 29 years of devoted public service. After retirement, Steve obtained land in Fredericktown, built a lovely retirement home with a pole barn, fishing pond, and enjoyed the fruits of his labor.
Steve was very interested in artifacts, rocks, and Native American culture. He was an avid reader while also keeping his home complete with chickens, fruit trees, and other gardening adventures. Steve loved animals, especially dogs. Steve has had two rottweilers, and two pit bulls. All who were and are very well trained. He was the dog whisperer, having rescued many abused dogs.
Steve and his father were very handy and creative, milling all the trim in his home along with making many items for his friends and family.
Steve was a devoted father, brother, uncle, and cousin to many. Steve is preceded in death by his mother Janice (Hand) Leachman and father Stephen Browne Leachman Sr. He is survived by his daughter Maya Carson Leachman of Gilbert, AZ; his sister Ruth McMakin (Leachman) Fitz of Lorain, Ohio; his niece Dorothy Leachman Fitz of Cleveland, Ohio; his sister Dorothy Hayes Leachman, and her husband Jerome C. Haverkos, of Hilliard, Ohio.
