EDITOR’S NOTE: The Richland Source Gray Matters team traveled to New York City on Oct. 24 for The New Old Age summit sponsored by The Atlantic. This was one of the topics covered at that convention.

We’ve all seen the elderly portrayed in cartoons. Pants way past the waist, pant legs not long enough. It’s dorky.

But what if style only gets better as we age?

Jean and Valarie of the @Idiosyncracticfashionistas on Instagram and blogs have followed that philosophy to find their niche.

The two “women of a certain age” have drawn a significant following through their instagram page, where they show off their fashion choices.

The two women spoke at the New Old Age conference held last month by The Atlantic in New York City.

“People have to be dressed, you may as well like the way you look,” Valarie said during the InstaGRAM panel.

The two met at a thrift shop. They noticed each other’s sense of fashion and hit it off as they searched the clothes racks. As time went on and they spent more time together, they were asked if they designed clothes and eventually were asked to start a blog, then an Instagram account.

“We have followers of all kinds, men, women, straight, gay, black, white, young, old — whatever,” Jean said. “And there are so many different people with fashion accounts. We’re not the only ones.”

The two New Yorkers have spent much of their lives dressing in unique ways that only they could do. Through their social media presence, the duo encourages everyone to find a way to dress to their liking — adding that people are mandated to wear clothes.

Beyond clothes, these travel the country inspiring those who see them to dress their best. They are showing that getting older can be fun, too.
