FREDERICKTOWN – Fredericktown Senior Activity Center will host the Safe  Communities Coalition’s Coffee with a Cop event on Wednesday, Dec. 19, from 1 to 2 pm.

Coffee with a Cop is an open discussion between local law enforcement, senior drivers and their family members. The event will include discussions regarding Amber Alerts, Silver Alerts, Project Lifesaver, and Knox County WENS Alerts, an emergency notification system used to contact local residents via phone messages, text messages, and emails in case of emergency.

Free traffic safety materials and refreshments will be provided.

“So far this year, five out of 12 individuals at fault in local fatal crashes were mature drivers 55 years or older,” said Elisa Beckett, Safe Communities Coalition coordinator at the Knox County Health Department. “Looking back to 2017, there were three mature drivers at fault in six fatal crashes. This tells us that there is an increase in need for educating mature drivers on the importance of practicing safe driving techniques.”

Coffee with a Cop provides senior citizens with the opportunity to meet with local law enforcement and ask questions about car safety, traffic laws, or any other concern they may have in regard to traffic safety.

“Our local law enforcement often discuss safe driving techniques and common traffic trends seen in the area,” said Beckett. “ Although every Coffee with a Cop event may focus on different topics, each discussion makes us one step close to a safer Knox County.”

Coffee with a Cop is free and open to the public. There is no need to pre-register. Fredericktown Senior Activity Center is located at 117 Columbus Road, the old high school.
