MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon’s newest gas station is expected to open in the coming weeks.
Walmart, located at 1575 Coshocton Ave., is putting the finishing touches on its new 1,400-square-foot fuel station, which will sit on the east side of the parking lot. Construction on the project began in September and is expected to wrap up soon.
“According to our contact with Walmart Media Relations, the company is working through the final details of the fuel station and at this point,” Mark Rickel, vice president of Lesic & Camper Communications, told Knox Pages this week. “The plan is to open late January, possibly early February.”
While Walmart representatives have told Rickel there will likely be a celebration for the opening of the fuel station, the media liaison said “Walmart is still working through those details.”
The gas station will have seven pumps and a convenience store, according to Anne Hatfield, director of state and local communications for Walmart. The store will offer soft drinks, coffee, snacks and more. It will be open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
“Walmart has fuel stations at hundreds of locations across the country and is always looking for ways to better serve our customers with the products they want,” Hatfield said in an emailed statement last fall. “The fuel station at the Coshocton Avenue store builds on how we serve our customers in the community.”
The gas station will sit directly in front of the east entrance/exit to the property. Hatfield said it will employ five to seven associates. She did not say whether there will be a rewards program for customers who make fuel purchases.
Once completed, Walmart will own Mount Vernon’s 11th gas station. Within close proximity, it will compete with the Hot Rods Food Mart (Marathon) across Coshocton Avenue, as well as the BP and Kroger gas stations down the road.
