Dr. Poole’s cabin is a surviving relic of the early Alsatian settlers who moved into southwestern Holmes County in the early 1800s. It sits a short distance further east on Old Mill Road.

The intersection of Alum Rock Road and Old Mill Road near the Holmes and Knox County border is the center of the legend of Sarah’s Grave. The old conifer to the left of the picture is the one discussed in the column.

This large old conifer tree along Old Mill Road (Richland Township Road 17) may be one of the few outwardly remaining signs that this was once a cemetery. Conifers were traditionally planted in cemeteries as a symbol of everlasting life.

The cemetery is on a bluff overlooking the Mohican River. Not even the cemetery’s original name is remembered. Today it is simple known as the location of Sarah’s Grave.

This spare patch of ground, then, must be the actual location of Sarah’s Grave. This early pioneer woman died en route west and was buried here by her family, who then continued along their journey.

The 1875 Holmes County Atlas shows this section of Richland Township, to which we’ve added an orange star to show the location of the forgotten cemetery, and a purple star to show the nearby location of the St. Joseph Mission.
