MOUNT VERNON — The familiar melody of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” rang through Mount Vernon on Thursday in celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary during the unveiling of the “Let Freedom Ring Blue Star Family Bell Circle” at American Heritage Park.
“The monument features 41 uniquely tuned bells arranged in a circle. As participants walk around the structure and strike the bells, the melody of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” plays.
It is dedicated to Blue Star Families, those with an immediate family member currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. While the Blue Star symbol traditionally honors active-duty service members, this installation specifically highlights the sacrifices made by the loved ones who support them at home,” according to a recent press release.
The presentation included a speech by Mount Vernon Middle School’s Principal Darin Prince. He is a 22-year member of the Ohio Army National Guard and has children in the local school district — which means he is part of a Blue Star family.
This past year, he played a pivotal role in Mount Vernon receiving the Purple Star School award. This award is received by schools with a vested interest in military connected students and families.
“While I put my name on the dotted line to be a service member, my family put their name on the dotted line to be a Blue Star family… as I look at this monument, there is one specific feature that catches my eye and captures my heart … that deliberate rock centerpiece,” Prince said.
That rock represents the military spouse who acts as the literal rock and unshakably anchors the family together while the military member is away, according to Prince.
A number of other representatives were in attendance
State Rep. Mark Hiner (R-Howard) presented the dedication to Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr, who spoke on the importance of recognizing Blue Star families.
“That spirit of responsibility to one another is a part of who we are. It’s ingrained in our DNA. In a few moments, the bell circle will play my country, and its words, ‘Sweet Land of Liberty, remind us that freedom is not just an idea, it is protected, supported by your family, and strengthened by communities that remember what has been entrusted to us,” Mayor Starr said.
Two members of the America250 Ohio team were present, Todd Kleismit, Executive Director and Taylor Tomu, Community Outreach and Engagement Specialist. Mount Vernon Safety Service Director Tanner Salyers was also in attendance.
The ceremony concluded with a playing of the bells by Prince’s three children. The Bell Circle memorial is open to the public and anyone can enjoy the musical celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
“Created by Michigan artist Tom Kaufman, the bell circle is handcrafted from recycled welding and oxygen tanks that are cut, tuned, welded and mounted to a circular steel structure before being powder coated. This process results in a unique public art installation that combines craftsmanship and patriotism,” according to a recent press release.
“This dedication helps us look both backward and forward as we remember the generations who sacrificed to build and defend the nation, and we look ahead asking, what type of community will you leave for our children and our grandchildren here in Mount Vernon. I believe our answer is found in the values that we try to live each day … May this bell circle be a place of reflection and pride. May its music remind us to honor those who serve, those who have served,” Mayor Starr said.
