CENTERBURG — The sound of the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance” filled the Centerburg High School gymnasium as the Class of 2026 filed in for the 139th annual commencement on Sunday.
But what perhaps was on their mind was their class song, “Take on the World,” by Sabrina Carpenter.
Eighty-two graduates accepted their diplomas, ready to begin the next stage of their lives while ending another.
Valedictorian Asher Kennedy told the graduates an ending can be a positive or a negative.
“But the thing people tend to forget is that every ending is the beginning of something else. As we are leaving the school year, don’t think about the people we leave behind, but look forward to the next event,” he told his fellow graduates.
Valedictorian Payton Tucker said graduation is a time to thank parents and families who support the students’ “ugly crazy schedule,” and the teachers who helped the students get to graduation day.
“I believe I can speak for most, if not all of us, but I’d say while we are so excited to be done with high school, we are grateful in some way, shape or form for the memories and friends we have made along the way, and that in the future, no matter the path we take, we’ll end up missing this place and each other,” Tucker said.
Allison Wilhelm also thanked parents, teachers, and families in her valedictorian address. She told her classmates not to forget who they are and where they came from as they move forward toward their dreams.
A never-ending love
Introducing the traditional rose ceremony for parent recognition, Class Vice President Sophie Garcia said the graduates were a product of their “ countless sacrifices, long days, early mornings, late-night talks, and love that had never gave upon us.”
“You supported us through every success and every challenge, and we will not be here without you. These roses are only a small symbol of our gratitude for everything you’ve done,” she said.
“Thank you for believing in us, cheering us on, and helping shape us into the people we are today.”
Tiara Sheppard, class secretary, led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance. Class treasurer Andy Cornejo Navarette introduced the valedictorians.
The CHS concert band and choir provided special music.
