MOUNT VERNON — Students from Adrianna Trace’s class at the Knox Learning Center spent part of their morning earlier this week participating in a community service project at Arch Park community garden.
Six students, grades 9 to 12, spread three tons of gravel in preparation for the installation of five new raised garden beds next week in the children’s garden area.
The raised beds were purchased with funds from Knox Community Hospital to support the development of the children’s garden area and youth education programs at Arch Park community garden.
Scotts Miracle-Gro team donated 225 cubic feet of organic garden soil. The soil donation was used to benefit gardens at the Northgate Head Start center, God’s Green Acres community garden in Centerburg, Community Roots in Mount Vernon, as well as the children’s garden at Arch Park community garden.
Youth programs at Arch Park community garden include the Knox Learning Center school garden program, the Back to Nature summer outdoor education series and the Green Teen Summer Internship program.
The Green Teens internship is a paid, eight-week program for teens ages 14 to 19. Interested teens can attend the open interview on May 18 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Arch Park community garden.
